This concordance will be an indispensable aid to scholars working on either the language or the content of Ancrent Wisse. It is based on the revised text of Ancrene Wisse in Cambridge, Corpus Christi College, MS 402, and follows it closely, eschewing even generally accepted emendations - a policy which has the advantage of straightforwardness (its users will know exactly what text they are getting), and whose disadvantages are minimized by the high overall quality of the Corpus text.

The main concordance gives full citations for all vernacular forms (both native English and loan words) with 222 or fewer occurrences. Forms occurring more than 222 times are cited here only as head-words, followed by the number of occurrences; for those occurring up to 417 times, the first 222 occurrences are cited fully in the 'Sample high frequency listings' and references to the rest are listed in the 'Supplementary high frequency indices'. Larger samples of forms occurring over 490 times, drawn from the text as a whole, are cited fully in the 'Sample high frequency listings', but other occurrences are not listed (full citations of all high-frequency forms are accessible through Jocelyn Wogan-Browne at the University of Liverpool). …
