This excellent microfiche reproduction, with introduction, is a welcome addition to the CIMA collection. Although the manuscripts of René of Anjou's Traité des tournois (probably composed c. 1450-60) now in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, are very well known, this publication of the Dresden version brings another dimension to the study of an important work. The Dresden MS appears to have been created independently of the 'original' illustrated version found in Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, MS f. fr. 2695. The copyist seems to have had only a written text without illuminations before him, as the illustrations assume a rather different form from those found in all other copies. Dating from the very end of the fifteenth, or from the early sixteenth, century, the Dresden MS is therefore later than the Paris versions, including those made for Louis de Bruges, lord of Gruuthuse. It must, on internal evidence, be dated after 1467 and, according to one of the editors, stems from 'un milieu nordique peut-être flamand'. …
