Irma Taavitsainen, The Index of Middle English Prose, Handlist X: Manuscripts in Scandinavian Collections (Cambridge: D. S. Brewer, 1994). xxvii + 46 pp. ISBN 0-85991-4143. £25.00. This slim volume contains much of interest for students of Middle English. In addition to the expected census of Middle English prose, it contains a short supplement to the Index of Middle English Verse for these collections (pp. xxi-xxii). Alchemical manuscripts ate found in Danish collections, and Irma Taavitsainen has found Eldredge's Ashmole handlist of great assistance in identifying texts, allowing modest supplementation of the lists of manuscripts given there. Other manuscripts of interest are the two Uppsala codices of Yorkshire devotional texts. C. 193 was written by Katillus Thorberni, one of the Bridgittines sent to England early in the fifteenth century when an English foundation was first mooted, and was proposed for the site of St Nicholas's Hospital outside York. The flyleaf fragment of a meditation on the Ave Maña is in an English hand. Monica Hedlund (in an article cited here at p. xvii n. 20) has argued that Katillus, who returned to Vadstena 'cum libris', is an important link in the transmission of Rolle texts and northern meditative materials to Vadstena (perhaps without the agency of Syon). …
