This is a collection of conférence papers and posters, presented at the eighth Medieval Sermon Studies Symposium, held in Louvain-laNeuve in 1992· The somewhat portentously entided International Medieval Sermon Studies Society (IMSSS to cognoscenti), which conducted this enterprise, has grown from modest beginnings. This is the eighth conference, but the first published volume of proceedings. Like many books of this kind, it is rather a salmagundi. The contents range from substantial articles to oudines of future research, and dot about between the ninth century and the fifteenth, during which time preachers ceased to write 'homilies' and began to compose 'sermons', a distinction which is, at any rate from an English perspective, somewhat artificial but at least gives the collection a theme. The emphasis is resolutely international. For full enjoyment, one needs to be equally enthusiastic about Anglo-Saxon, German, French, Portuguese and Italian preaching. …
