Le Jeu d'Adam, ed. Véronique Dominguez, Champion Classiques: Moyen Age 34 (Paris: Honoré Champion, 2012). 368 pp. ISBN 978-2-7453-2327-9. euro13.50. Véronique Dominguez provides a new edition and an extended commentary of the oldest French play, the anonymous Jeu d'Adam, extant in a single manuscript (Tours, Bibliothèque Municipale 927), a text which has already had several editions. Dominguez discusses all the traditional issues related to the text in a scrupulous introduction, such as the sources of the play, the supposed milieu of its production and reception, its puzzling relationship with the liturgy, and its disputed structure. On the latter subject, the Dit des quinze signes is considered an integral part of the play as conceived by the scribe and is therefore included in the established text Significant discussion is devoted to the variety of possible receptions of the work, taking into account the original independence of the French dialogues from the Latin stage directions which are provided in the manuscript Dominguez proposes a consideration of the dialogues as a self-sufficient representation set in a space defined by conventions. …
