Pitts provides the first critical edition of Estoire de l'Evangile, an anonymous Gospel harmony extant in a single manuscript, the composite 'liber Niger'. This previously unpublished Anglo-Norman prose text may be dated with certainty between c. 1170 and 1294, while a more precise date in the middle of the thirteenth century may be only very tentatively proposed. Written as an aid to meditation with a complete account of the life of Christ, the work presents a unified, chronologically ordered narrative obtained through the integration of the four Gospels, removing repetitions and contradictions. A relevant resource for the study of medieval literature and spirituality, the Estoire de IE vanóle is also a crucial text with regard to the tradition of Gospel harmony, which dates back to the early Christian Church. …
