Prose Brut to 1332, ed. Heather Pagan, Anglo-Norman Text Society 69 (Manchester: AngloNorman Text Society, 2011). xiii + 280 pp. ISBN 0-905474-54-6. £25 to Society members; £37.50 to non-members. The text edited here, found in three manuscripts, represents a version of what is commonly known as the 'Short Version' of the AngloNorman Prose Brut, itself an expanded version of the original ANPB to 1272. The ANPB to 1332 comprises the common text to 1307 alongwith the 'Short Continuation', breaking off with an English raid on Haddington Fair in Scotland. Though it does prolong the narrative beyond 1307, it lacks material found in the 'Long Version', such as the prophecies of Merlin, a prose prologue, and numerous factual details added to the Long Version through revision of the original text and the addition of a longer continuation. Pagan notes that these two expanded versions of the ANPB were probably written independently, with the shorter version slightly pre-dating the longer one. …
