This volume contains an English prose translation of the Old French Chanson d'Antioche as preserved in MS A (BnF fr. 12558). A comparative table allows one to track correspondences and divergences between this text and that of the considerably longer MS B (BnF fr. 786); a number of passages found only in MS B are translated in an appendix, allowing further comparison between the two recensions. The volume contains a lengthy introduction detailing the evolution of the text and its possible sources, authorship, and patronage; its mixture of historical fact and literary fantasy, and its qualities as a literary work; and its place in the Old French Crusade Cycle overall. …
