This volume offers a new translation of Metge's Llibre de Fortuna i Prudencia, published together with the Catalan text, adopted from the excellent critical edition by Lluís Cabré (Barcelona, 2010). One of the first works written by Metge (written in 1381, when he was in his mid-thirties), the JJibreis the first-person verse narrative of an allegorical trip in which the narrator (who can be identified with Metge himself) travels to the Island of Fortune, where he has a bitter debate with Fortune, and is comforted by Patience. David Barnett's translation is accurate and elegant; he has chosen, and rightly so, 'to strike a balance between following the original close enough for the translation to be of use for those seeking help when reading the Catalan, and at the same time providing a text that will give those unfamiliar with Catalan a readable and faithful rendering of Metge's original', as he states in the 'Translator's Note' (p. …
