Nuffield Trust, an independent source of evidence-based research and policy analysis for improving health care in the UK, has marked the 65th anniversary of the NHS by carrying out a number of activities to promote discussion on the current state of the NHS. On 5th July 2013 the NHS reached retirement age, with many health leaders calling for a review and a new vision for the NHS.

A publication entitled 'The Wisdom of the Crowd: 65 Views of the NHS at 65' features at the centre of these activities. Contributions from major players who have been involved in the development of the health service provide a series of reflective essays on the successes and failures of the service, giving us an insight into key issues. Focusing on analysis and debate, the report looks at how the NHS and the social care system can best adapt and respond to the challenges of the future. This new report comes at a time when most people are agreed that the health service is at a crossroads: while the contributors overall are unsure as to how the service will operate in the future, they are agreed on the fact that it will be 'challenged', a word that came up throughout the interviews. …
