Lecture: "Female Gaze(eye) Behind the Camera"

Zoe Dirse was invited in May 2013 to deliver a lecture on Cinematography and gender at Spiru Haret University in Bucharest. The title Zoe Dirse created was "Female Gaze(eye) Behind the Camera." She was addressing the question of whether there is a significant difference between the way a male cinematographer looks at and films an image and the way a female cinematographer sees and frames an image. There were about fifty people who attended the lecture - a mix of students and professors and people interested in filmmaking. Zoe Dirse began the lecture by asking the audience if they were aware of the percentage of women cinematographers working in film. They did not know or assumed that it was fairly equal between men and women. They were quite surprised when she told them that only 0.1% of cinematographers were female. She then shared with them her own journey into a career in cinematography including clips of her film work. …
