Raise the Roof: Our Theme, Our Challenge

According to the online Urban Dictionary, the following is a key definition of raising the roof: "The roof represents the limitations that loom over us all. 'Raise the roof' begs we work together to increase our mutual potential rather than oppressing competition."

As an example, we are given: "Let's raise the roof, my enemy; the glass ceiling is keeping us all down."

Raising the Roof/Advancing the Nation's Health is the theme of the 2013 NLN Education Summit, a program replete with presentations that will help us introduce innovative curricula, strengthen our networks and partnerships, facilitate interprofession- al education, and celebrate our accomplishments. A host of concurrent sessions organized into four areas (deans and directors, innovations in teaching, leadership, and simulation and technology) promises important new knowledge. Consider these topics, to name a few: advancing health IT competencies; nurse scientists mentoring bedside nurses in research; balancing student rights and academic discipline; a toolkit for participatory community-based research; concept-based curricula; e-books in the classroom; and developing metacognitive skills. This latter pre- sentation sounds perfect for all of us facing the chal- lenge of this fast-paced, knowledge-worker world.

From this small sample you will see that the Summit promises something for all nurse educators, from novice to expert and in between. As you will not be able to attend every concurrent session, I rec- ommend creating a buddy system with colleagues to enhance your collective learning. …
