Article excerpt

First of all, I wish to express my gratitude to my parents, Peter and Marie Greasley, whose generous sponsorship and support made my research possible. Since this book emerges from the research I carried out for my PhD, which I conducted at the University of Derby, I offer particular thanks to my supervisor, Dr Sam Kasule, not only for his support and advice throughout all my ups and downs, but also for his unfailing belief in my ability to complete this project. Further thanks go to Professor Neil Campbell, who secured me an office in which to work, and Dr Christine Berberich; both were always on hand to offer encouragement and support. Many thanks to Dr Monica Germana and Dr Teresa Barnard for their advice and encouragement, and to Professor Chris Brannigan, Dr Alex Fedorov, Dr Sharon Mathews, Steven Macnamara, Kim Hammond, and Bridget Leadbeater for lending me their ears and offering feedback on my ideas and writing, and so much more. I owe much gratitude to George Humphreys for her assistance in arranging my research and bibliographical materials and help with ordering my bibliography. Thanks also go to the editors of Rodopi Cross/Cultures series, in particular Professor Geoffrey Davis and my very efficient and knowledgeable technical editor, Dr Gordon Collier.

I owe a debt of gratitude to Matjorie Oludhe Macgoye for her correspondence and assistance, and also to Barbara Kimenye for all the questions answered and time willingly given, in addition to the very special friendship we built up during the course of my research. …
