I began working on collage in a dissertation that explored the use of ready-made materials in modem American literature at The University of Iowa, and this book extends and develops that work. Neither the dissertation nor this book would have been possible without the support, insight, and encouragement of my adviser Rudolf E. Kuenzli. His astonishing knowledge of the historical avant-garde and his generosity have deeply informed all my scholarship.
