This collection is an extraordinary documentation of older styles of rural traditional music from the plains region that stretches across parts of both Colombia and Venezuela. Although the recording focuses on the municipality of Mani, home to around 10,000 people, the eighteen tracks are a good introduction to the region as a whole, both its variety and its homogeneity. Thus, we find work songs; joropo dance music in different forms and performance styles and on different subjects; and games and diversions incorporating music and dance-the latter little known nowadays.

One of the most valuable practices this collection documents is a traditional style of performing on melodic plucked string instruments. This functional approach to performance sounds is convincingly economical thanks to the absence of special embellishments and newer virtuosic techniques. …
