Once in a life-time there comes along an individual that truly goes beyond words to describe the impact that they have made to the Academy. I am so sad to say that we have recently lost such a person-Dr. JoAnn Carland. The impact on me personally has been so great that it has taken over two months for me to grasp the significance of that loss and express my feelings. I know that I will never be able to put in words how much JoAnn meant to me and all of the many individuals that had the honor of knowing her, but will attempt to do so in this dedication of this issue of JBE to this wonderful person.

So many years ago that I don't want think about, I remember looking across the room at an Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship annual meeting and seeing what I thought at the time was a strange couple. I asked a good friend, who was the man in the cowboy hat and the Eton jacket and the lady with him in a very similar outfit. His reply-Jim and JoAnn Carland, and that he would love to introduce us. I could not believe that I was going to meet the two authors that had the greatest impact on the direction I had decided to take in my career-Entrepreneurship. It had all come about from one article that I had read of theirs-"Differentiating Entrepreneurs from Small Business Owners: A Conceptualization". …
