"Understanding what you sing is the basic concept of the Gateway series" (Back Cover). This goal has given us two previous excellent song publications by John Glenn Paton in the Gateway series-Gateway to German Lieder and Gateway to Italian Art Songs-along with an accompanying diction book for each language. This third publication follows the same format as the first two: Introduction, About This Edition, The Composers and Their Times (consisting of sections for the Classical Era, Romanticism, and After Romanticism, each with short sketches of their respective composers), twenty-three songs (each with IPA and English translations of the text, Poetic Background, Musical Background, and Source), and Phonemes of French. The book and CDs may be bought separately or together; the diction book is separate. The songs chosen span the early 1700s through the early 1900s and represent beautiful examples of chansons and mélodies that give the student singer a progressive acquaintance with French art song, both historically and stylistically. …
