The formal establishment of an international academic society to facilitate research in a common scientific field marks a significant stage in the recognition of that field. The foundation of the Societas pro Studio rythmi biologici-an international society devoted specifically to fostering a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the rhythmic behaviors of biological organisms-signals the beginning of the formation of a new disciplinary entity, known today as chronobiology. Prior to the founding of this Society, researchers in many countries worked within their own disciplines of botany or zoology or electrical engineering or in defined subdisciplines of these, such as histology and endocrinology, often neglecting the related work of colleagues in other fields. The founding members of the Societas recognized this problem from the beginning and sought to create both a common forum for sharing the results of their work across traditional disciplinary boundaries and a common outlet for publication of the proceedings of their biannual meetings.

That this important, early step in creating a disciplinary identity took place in Sweden in 1937 can be explained by a number of historical, economic, and institutional circumstances: the presence of a core group of biological rhythms researchers in Swedish academic and medical institutions; a historical tradition of interest in the physics of helio-atmospheric phenomena and the rhythms of light and darkness within Swedish science and medicine; and a relatively pleasant and accessible, economically strong, and politically stabile climate for hosting the formation of a new academic society. …
