Sir Anthony Caro, OM, CBE, RA (1924-2013)

I first met Tony when I was teaching sculpture studies at Leeds University in the 1980s. The postgraduate students were keen to move on from reading texts to seeing sculpture, and to meeting practising sculptors. I approached Tony with some diffidence, and was greeted with that kindness and friendliness for which he was renowned. He took us all in, explained how he saw the remarkable development of his own career, and treated the students with immense goodwill. When Leeds hosted the Art Historians Association Conference in 1992, even though I was not a subscribing member, I was deputed to introduce Tony's lecture, and be his minder for the evening. We were joined by Edward Allington, Gregory Fellow in Sculpture at the university, and we adjourned to the Fenton where Tony and Ed debated the merits or otherwise of replication in sculpture.

Some time after the founding of the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association, it dawned on us that we really needed some 'famous names' as Vice-Presidents. …
