Despite the popular notion that for the United States the Korean War is the "Forgotten War," a vast body of literature exists which covers nearly all elements of that conflict-at least from the Western perspective. It is for this reason that Red Wings Over the Yalu is such an important work. Xiaoming Zhang provides a much needed examination of one aspect of that war that has received scant attention, at best: the Chinese and Soviet employment of air power against UN forces in Korea. This book is the product of Zhang's extensive research. He plumbed newly declassified Soviet and Chinese archival material and conducted a number of interviews with Chinese participants in this war to great effect. The result is a thoughtful and well-balanced examination of a crucial portion of the defining period of the Cold War. …
