A recent panel debate entitled 'Local authorities: Meeting new public health responsibilities in smoking cessation' heard from key stakeholders and policymakers, including shirley Cramer CBe, Chief executive of the Royal society for Public Health, in an open discussion on many smoking-related issues, including planning, commissioning, and delivering tobacco control interventions.

Smoking remains the principal cause of ill-health and premature death in the United Kingdom, with the cost to the NHs of treating smoking-related illness estimated between £2.7 and £5.2billion every year. Recent audits carried out have demonstrated that smoking cessation support and tobacco control strategies are not equally prioritised across england, with one in three health and wellbeing boards not making it a priority in their joint health and wellbeing strategies. …
