Fr. 120 per volume. It is fifty years since the last edition of this text and this is the first to make it accessible to a wider readership. Volume I contains an introduction which summarizes the whole text and includes a somewhat inconclusive discussion of the date of the original chanson. Much of the introduction is concerned with descriptions of the manuscripts, and the language and versification of the base manuscript (F - BN fr. 1 58 z). There are twenty-one extant manuscripts so the choice of base manuscript is both critical and difficult. Manuscript F is an interesting and well-justified choice. The early editors (Paris and Du Meril) based their edition on manuscript D (BN fr. 146I) and the only edition to date based on a single manuscript was based on A, which had also been the base manuscript of editions of other texts of the sub-cycle. F is more complete than D and from a different part of the manuscript tradition from A. Its disadvantages as a base manuscript are relatively trivial, inconveniences rather than problems. The most obvious is that five different hands were involved in the copying, each with peculiar graphies. The editor looks at the language of each scribe in turn. Comments on the language of the text, where it can be distinguished from the language of the scribes, are grouped under alphabetical headings, rather than the more usual divisions of morphological and syntactical elements. …
