This volume prints selected papers from the fourth Cardiff Conference on the Theory and Practice of Translation in the Middle Ages held in Conques in July 1993. As with previous volumes emerging from this valuable forum, the papers printed here cover a range of medieval topics and some also address theoretical and practical issues raised by modern translations of medieval texts.

The volume opens with thoughtful reflections by its editors on the need for a more nuanced view of the relationship between medieval translation theory and practice, even within single texts (Ellis), and on the aspiration of mystical and spiritual writers to translate and transcribe their experience of the ineffable (Tixier). Thereafter the papers may be grouped loosely together under broad headings: Religious: K. Ashley and P. Sheingorn exploring the multiple meanings of translatio in the development and codification of the St Foy legend; F. Bourgne on the links between translatio stud and furta sacra; G. Cil;man on the adaptive strategies employed by the preacher(s) in her Lollard sermons; B. Wetemeier on a German translation of the Visiones Georgii; J. Williamson on the intertextual translations of Phillippe de Mezieres; R. Vnaden on the impact of the discourse of discretio spirituum on the written accounts of female visionaries; C.
