This refreshing and varied anthology of late medieval and early Renaissance writing in France is informed by a healthy scepticism towards the traditional periodizations of literary history. As his mildly polemical title makes clear, Martijn Rus has selected for study a period that has tended to escape classification because of the challenge it poses to the dominant model of 'centuries'; at best, it has been considered an era of 'transition'. Retaining Huizinga's image of the 'autumn' of the Middle Ages while emphasizing its continuing vitality, Rus justifies his choice of period with a cogent survey of historical and social factors, reserving pride of place for a consideration of the referential nature of literature and the evidence it provides of a late medieval mentality. …
