The Sublime and Beautiful is based on a true story that the director Blake Robbins witnessed in his life. College professor David Conrad is a caring father of three children. He has an outwardly good relationship with his wife Kelly while he is cheating on her with a young woman.

One night when he's out with his lover, Katie, a drunk driver crashes into Kelly's car as she is driving home from a Christmas party, killing all three children and wounding Kelly badly.

Kelly and David struggle to escape their sense of guilt. David is so upset because of not being with his children on the accident night. Kelly feels guilty because of the accident. Inconsolable grief and fury causes them to withdraw from their parents and most acquaintances.

When the drunk driver is set free on bail in their home town, David starts to follow him secretly. The man tries to commit suicide at his home, but cannot manage it due to his wife. In the end, David finds a convenient time, goes to the drunk driver's home, and kills him. After the murder, David goes to a church and asks for forgiveness. Nobody knows he killed the driver other than the police officer who witnessed the car accident. …
