Parental Approaches for Educating Children in Bahawalpur, Pakistan

Abstract

Results of this paper basis on a survey study conducted to identify the parents' approach towards education of their children in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. The study aimed to investigate the approaches of parents they adopt for educating their children in Pakistan by using data collected through questionnaire from 759 intermediate level students. The study concluded that parents have adopted some styles that negatively affect educational attainment of their children. Some from them included practicing gender discrimination, imposing decisions about the educational matters on children, preferring tuitions instead of helping themselves and ignoring call by school. Study suggested parents to understand the needs of students, adopting approaches helpful in promotion of children through better educational process.

Introduction

Education is a social institution, which provides mental, physical, ideological and moral training to the individuals of the nation. Education is considered a right for each person in this age specially keeping in view the value of education. National education policy (1998, p.5) remarked "education is a powerful agent which provides mental, physical, ideological and moral training of the individuals. It is an instrument for the spiritual development as well as material fulfillment of human needs". Education not only imparts morals in the young minds but also stimulus them to fit into the fabric of social life. It is necessary for the moralistic as well as spiritual development of human beings.

Most commonly, education is considered learning at school but in reality educational process is related to both school and home. A child spends some hours at school and most of time with the family. Role of family in education and personality development of a person is vital. Family provide basis for role of a person in society. It motivate a person to do what the head of a family wishes for him/her. Parents have vital role in the life of a person. From the first day of life, child starts observing parents. He smells sense of love in the lap of mother and shelter of his /her parents. This is the reason because of every child feel protection near to his/her family. This situation remains same almost in all societies especially until the child becomes an adult. After getting independence in life at young age too, every one turns to family members, especially parents in severe difficult situations and expects family to help him/her to face cruel realities of life. Parents have lot of loving and caring attitudes for children at all stages in all societies of the world.

In developing and under developing societies, parental role is different from developed societies. Conditions in a poor family are severe for every member. SES related factors such as wealth, status, education and prestige depicts attitudes of human beings too. Observations show that economic conditions of life, environment of area, prestige of a person in society create different styles in human beings. Parents introduce picture of life to child from their own angle. In the process of education, also parents affect differently the educational and personality grooming of their child.

Parents belonging to different socio economic status, life conditions and having different experiences react differently to their children. From educationists' point of view, some attitudes and styles of parents benefit the education of a child in school. Many styles of parent, on the other hand leave bad effects on education and training of a child. It is valuable to study the role of parents and their helping styles for the education of their children to improve parenting styles and educate people especially in educationally poor areas. Therefore, keeping in view the role and importance of parents and family in the process of education of a child, "parental approaches for educating children in Pakistan" was conducted in which different variables related to parental preferred attitudes and styles towards education of their children were studied. …
