A global study of managers and workers by Proudfoot Consulting gives fresh insight into the way organisations fail to operate effectively. Proudfoot Consulting's report is entitled Untapped Potential - the barriers to optimum corporate productivity and comprises 1,357 analyses of companies in nine countries, plus an opinion poll of 2,700 chief executive officers. Here is a management guide to the ten 'productivity killers', as identified by the firm, which specialises in productivity improvement.

1. Firmly resist all attempts to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of whatever your team does. If you already have procedures and processes for measuring output, try to make them as complex as possible, so that only the finance director has a chance of understanding them.

2. Depending on your management style, set all objectives either too low or too high. With the former, you'll have an easy life and will be able to show achievement of results. With the latter, you have the perfect excuse for cracking down hard on your team for being slackers.

3. Always plan from the 'as-is' position, rather than what is realistically possible. That way, you can minimise any nasty changes. Senior managers will also then accept a degree of failure as routine.

4. Do not be sidetracked from fire-fighting and micro-managing detail by suggestions that you plan ahead and anticipate problems. …
