In the tradition of unlikely friendships, Fionna Robinson's newest picturebook weaves together themes of collaboration, creativity, and nature to remind us that even the most surprising of partnerships can be beautiful. In Whale Shines: An Artistic Tale, Whale unexpectedly uncovers that he too is an artist who can shine in the depths of the ocean. The tale begins with images of Whale as he swims through the water to advertise "The Hugest Art Show in the Deep & Briny." Along the way, he observes the hammerhead shark building sculptures from salvage, the eel wriggling wavy lines in the sand, and the squid designing with ink. The determined creativity among his friends inspires the artist within Whale. Whale, however, feels reluctant to create-that is until he is encouraged by the smallest of friends. "Why don't you try?" they ask.

With the help of bioluminescent plankton, Whale twists and turns in the water to arrange star-like designs that shimmer in the backdrop of the evening sky. …
