Peering out from their tent, the daughters

Blush modestly enough, appear not

To be moved by Jacob's wandering eye

Now leering for once away from home

As their father-a plump Laban-

Greets him with casual eyes.

The scene is set for story.

It mirrors blessing gained through trickery,

As Jacob works the fields seven years over

Then receives an unwanted bride.

It does not disappoint as it delves into family:

The rivalry of sisters who bear a nation's future;

The foretelling of this future through names

Of sons and daughters; the mandrake plots

To gain a husbands look.

To deserve acceptance:

How one strives for this promise even now

In moving toward and being moved by another's fastened eye. …
