Faithful readers of this journal know its devotion to publishing eye- witness accounts of the Civil War and also recognize Mark K. Christ as one of the foremost editors and annotators of such documents. Christ has combed through seventy years' worth of the Arkansas Historical Quarter- ly to assemble diaries, letters, and memoirs into a composite first-person narrative of the conflict from beginning to end. I Do Wish This Cruel War Was Over: First-Person Accounts of Civil War Arkansas from the Ar- kansas Historical Quarterly, coedited by Patrick G. Williams, preserves many of the annotations offered by the original editors of the documents, but Christ has added fresh ones. This testimony shows the Quarterly to have been attentive to the importance of guerrilla fighting, women's expe- rience, "total" war, and active emancipation by slaves themselves long be- fore these subjects became the object of much scholarly interest. Though the Quarterly has featured a broad variety of Civil War sources, this col- lection is focused on those that speak of the war in Arkansas.
