Diu Crône is one of the major discoveries in Medieval German literature from the last decades, a major Arthurian 'Gawein romance' of some 30,000 lines of couplet verse composed r.1230 in Austria, and previously almost totally neglected because of prejudice regarding 'post-classical' romance, as well as the inaccessibility of the 1852 edition - and no doubt also its length. But how to edit it? For lines 1-12281 we have a 'good' fourteenth-century manuscriptin Vienna (V), to which can be added some 1,200 verses of the same recension in Linz (D). The only manuscript that is not a fragment is Heidelberg (P), from 1479, which has been adapted to the language and literary taste of the Rhineland in the later fifteenth century. In 1852 Gottlob H. F. Scholl printed the text from P, this being the only manuscript known to him. Fritz-Peter Knapp and Manuela Niesner, and for the second part of the poem Florian Kragl and the late Alfred Ebenbauer (in 2000 and 2005), reset the points quite determinedly - and very successfully, with an imaginatively conceived two-volume ATB critical edition based principally on V for the first part and P for the second part, preserving the graphic forms of the manuscripts much more closely than had been customary with editions of German Arthurian romance hitherto (cf.
