Taken individually, the majority of the twenty-one articles in this collection would appeal only to the most specialist of readerships: she or he interested, for example, in thirteenth-century French arithmetical lexemes; in the formation of an Occitan terminology for the transmission of geomantic texts; or in the names given to different species of fish in vernacular literary works. Taken together, however, they provide a fascinating insight into the many technical uses to which various medieval languages - and medieval vernaculars in particular - were put in the twelfth-sixteenth centuries. Echoing the multilingual nature of its subject matter (chiefly Old French and Latin, but also Occitan and several of the medieval Italian dialects), the volume is largely in French, but also contains four contributions in German. …
