It has long been a commonplace to assume that the epic traditions of the Germanic, Italian, and Iberian High and Late Mddle Ages emanate from the influence and conscious adaptation of the Old French chanson de geste. Since the turn of the millennium, a growing number of conferences and publications have set out to revisit this assumption, among them a conference held in Göttingen in August 2008. The volume under review contains a selection of the work presented at this conference. The proceedings develop and discuss trajectories for the study of the chanson degeste's impact and influence across the borders of languages and academic disciplines. The first section offers survey articles dedicated to the genre's defining features and lines of development, providing a framework for the following sections. Focusing on the origins and transfer of dominant themes and motives, on functions of the epic text, and on axes of transfer across the boundaries of literatures and languages, these combine a broad variety of case studies. …
