Christian Heimerl and the Middle English Texts series provide a critical edition of William of Saliceto's Anatomía in Middle English, based on Cambridge, Trinity College MS R. 14.41, with a parallel text of the medieval Latin Anatomía edited from Leipzig, Universitätsbibliothek, MS 1177. William of Saliceto's practice of uniting surgery and medicine made him unique among his generation of medical practitioners, and the Anatomía is the fourth book of his thirteenth-century Chirurgia. In the introduction to the volume Heimerl discusses Saliceto's life, the status of medicine in western Europe during his life, his importance as a physician, and the status of medical practices in England in comparison to the rest of Europe. …
