More than fifty years ago, during the redaction of the Répertoire des plus anciens textes en prose française, Brian Woledge started to work on a complete list of French manuscripts dating from the twelfth century, with the aim of providing a documentary basis for linguistic studies. Woledge's initiative was never abandoned: the project was extended and adapted, and the methodological framework was specified through the contribution of modern approaches to palaeography and codicology. The current catalogue is the result of this extended enterprise, finally completed by Maria Careri, Christine Ruby, and Ian Short. The core of the work is the description of ninety-seven manuscripts, a complete overview of the extant French production dating from the crucial century for the rise and early development of vernacular written culture. …
