The Medieval Romance of Alexander: Jehan Wauquelin's 'The Deeds and Conquests of Alexander the Great', trans. Nigel Bryant (Woodbridge: Boydell Press, 2012). xviii +306 pp. ISBN 978-1-84384-332-0. £50.00. With this translation of Jean Wauquelin's Burgundian Alexander romance (mid-fifteenth century), Nigel Bryant delivers the first modern English translation of a medieval French Alexander text to date. This is long overdue and the translator makes a convincing case for his choice of Wauquelin's text: it incorporates all of the major Alexander texts in French which precede it, making it eminently representative of the tradition. Bryant's introduction succinctly demonstrates how Wauquelin managed his sources, before highlighting some of the key theological and political issues raised by Wauquelin's work. These analyses are well executed, though Bryant's very lengthy quotations from his own translation seem slightly excessive in an introduction which comprises only twenty-four pages in total. Bryant's translation is at the literal end of the spectrum but it is also highly readable and the translator permits himself an appropriate degree of colour ('his blood up' for 'enflammez', p. …
