In two separate cases, consolidated for oral argument, hearing-disabled students filed suit under Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) claiming school system was required to provide word-for-word real-time transcription service. Both students' parents requested a Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) system to help the students' follow classroom instructions. In both cases, the CART requests were denied, but other accommodations were offered.
