The discovery some years ago of the manuscript of seventy-two short plays performed in Lille in the fifteenth century was the most exciting event in French medieval drama since Cohen's dramatic discovery and editing of the Mons producer's copy and accounts in the 19205. A series of articles on the plays, the illustrations, and their performance details has continued to whet our appetites for several years, and the final appearance of the first volume of the projected five-volume edition of the plays by Alan Knight is therefore an occasion for much rejoicing.

Since the plays are a collection put together over a considerable period of time, Knight has sensibly decided to publish them in chronological order of the subject matter, and this first offering, Le Pentateuque, comprises twelve plays based on Genesis and Exodus, from the Creation and fall of Adam to the giving of the Ten Commandments. Further volumes will include the other sixty plays: thirty-one from the Old and twenty-one from the New Testament, four from Roman history, and four from La Legende chretienne (a miracle play, a saint's play, Octavian and the Sibyl, and a moralite of the Assumption). …
