In 1981 Helmut Gneuss published 'A preliminary list of manuscripts written or owned in England up to 1100' in the journal Anglo-Saxon England. This was a major event in the study of Anglo-Saxon culture. It is not simply an inventory of manuscripts written and owned in England up to 1100, but a tool that enables Anglo-Saxonists to reconstruct libraries of particular scholars and repositories of learning, to study the intellectual life and manuscript production of the period, and to identify the transmission of manuscripts between centres of learning in England and elsewhere. The 'Preliminary list' is ordered according to the location of the manuscripts in modern libraries and arranged in two alphabetical sequences. The first sequence includes the libraries of the British Isles and the second includes the libraries of the European continent and America. The list covers 947 items in all and provides the following information for each manuscript: a serial number identifying its position in the list, its library shelfmark, a list of its main contents, any known information concerning date, origin, provenance, and the language(s) of the text(s). The 'Preliminary list' has been an indispensable tool and essential starting point for anyone interested in Anglo-Saxon literary culture.
