An Agenda for Developmental Education Research

What do developmental educators want to know about their discipline? One of the goals of the 3rd National Conference on Research in Developmental Education was to find that out. At this meeting, a round-table discussion was held at which many attendees participated. They consisted of developmental education faculty, program administrators, and student support services professionals. These professionals met with the objective of establishing an agenda of research topics pertinent to the field of developmental education. This agenda may help guide the efforts of graduate students, scholar practitioners, and research professionals. Following is a brief summary of the proposed agenda.

I. Developmental Intervention Effectiveness: What are the critical elements of interventions that make the biggest difference in student success?

II. Student Characteristics: What demographic, cognitive, and noncognitive variables can be used to describe and impact the success of students participating in developmental education?

III. Support Services: How do activities such as tutoring, tutor training, mentoring, and advising impact student success?

IV. Research Methods and Access: How can developmental education research adhere to more stringent methodology protocol and provide more broad-based access to research findings?

V. Multicultural Student Issues: What practices yield the best results for the achievement of learning outcomes in special populations such as African American, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander? …
