Much research based on this model has followed, from a range of disciplines across a number of quality projects. The Donabedian model has been used to guide research outside the health care delivery setting, for the basic components of the model are easily adaptable. The articles in this issue of Nursing Education Perspectives fit the core model components.

Structure

Within the Donabedian model, structure includes all components that are stable within a system. These can be people employed in the delivery of education or care (faculty, academic administrators), and those receiving care or education (patients, students). Structure would also include the place of care delivery or educational institution, or the online delivery platform of the education. In this issue, the structure of BS-PhD programs is evaluated by interviews with program directors. Ellenbecker and Kazmi share the results of this important new structure in nursing education designed to address the faculty shortage.

Process

This component includes all actions that constitute health care delivery. Within the educational model, the process component would include all our teaching and learning activities and the manner in which teaching occurs. Within nursing education, we have multiple examples of modalities, and, more recently, we have begun to evaluate our methods for delivering nursing education. For example, in this issue, Plante and Asselin identify best practices for creating social presence and caring behaviors in online nursing courses. And Ironside presents significant content evaluating the use of Narrative Pedagogy in nursing education over a 10-year period.
