With more than 1000 pages, 60 chapters and 66 contributors, the 3rd edition of the Managed Health Care Handbook is not the kind of book you can read overnight but it is worthwhile having it on your desk if you have any interest in health care management.

To quote the preface, "the primary mission of this book is to provide a strategic and operational resource for managers in the field." It is based as much as possible on operations of managed care plans rather than on theoretical concepts. It is in fact a useful source of information to managers who want to gain an understanding of managed care. For example, Parts IV and V of the handbook deal with operational management, marketing and finance. Particularly, chapter 31 on claims and benefits administration as well as chapter 40 on operational finance and budgeting and chapter 43 on rating and underwriting will provide very useful information. …
