Ancient Stupa Being Restored in Original Shape

The project to restore the 2000 year-old stupa in Mingora its original shape is funded by Pakistan Italian Debt-Swap Agreement (PIDSA) and ACT-Field School, an Italian archaeological mission, is executing the project.

'The stupa in Saidu Sharif has great importance for Buddhists', Dr Luca Maria Olivieri, a prominent Italian archaeologist who is looking after the restoration project, told Dawn.

He said that they were working on a large number of Gandhara sites in Swat district.

He said that they were working on partial restoration of Buddhist historical sites in Gunbad Balokalai, Amlok dara and Bazeera Barikot areas.

Dr Luca said that Jahanabad Buddha, the most important statue of Buddha in the area, would be restored soon. The ancient stupa in SaiduSharif was excavated during 1970 to 1982 and later it was handed over to the department of archaeology Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he added.

'Its condition was very bad when we came here in 2011. The site was used as cricket ground', Dr Luca said.

He added that they started general cleaning of the site soon af ter their arrival while its restoration work was started in 2012. …
