Dr Dennis Walker, adjunct researcher on Thai Muslims at Monash Asia Institute (MAI, Monash University, Australia), has concluded a joint project on Bangladesh history with Dr Aline Scott-Maxwell of the Asian Studies Collection at the Matheson Library, Monash University in Melbourne, assisted by Ms Sumi Kato and Mr Hueimin Chen. 100 Bengali tracts on Islam penned by Australian missionaries to convert the Bengali Muslims to Christianity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century were shown to them. The team negotiated borrowing the yellowing, fragile Bengali tracts from the Global Interaction section of the Australian Baptist Church, and then scanned every page. Dr Walker, who can read Bengali, wrote a detailed English summary of almost all the pamphlets and leaflets. The Bangladeshi researchers at the Monash Asia Institute (MAI) explained difficult words in the tracts to the extent that they could given that the documents are from long ago when the Bengali language was in flux. …
