Welcome to the first issue of 2014 and my first as managing editor. It is going to be hard to fill the shoes leftby my predecessor Boyd Hunter who has done a fantastic job for the last six years as managing editor. Boyd maintains his connection to the AJLE by becoming a new co-editor together with Anne Daly and Alan Duncan. We say thanks to Nicholas Biddle, Paul Flatau and Guyonne Kalb for their support of the journal as co-editors and are sorry to see them step down. We are thankful to Siobhan Austen and Sholeh Maani who will remain in their roles as co-editors. John Creedy has leftthe editorial board after many years during which he was also a major contributor to the journal as an author. We wish him well.

Sadly we lost one of our greatest supporters, as an author and a board member, Paul Miller, who died on November 27, 2013 in Perth. He will be sadly missed by the economics profession in general and labour economists in particular. In this issue we include an obituary to Paul by Barry Chiswick reprinted from The Royal Economic Society newsletter January 2014. In his honour there will be a conference in November in Fremantle incorporated into our annual Australian Labour Market Research Workshop. A flyer for this event is contained in this issue. The best papers (subject to the usual refereeing process) will be featured in a special issue of the AJLE next year.

A new feature, which we hope will be continuing, is profiles of some of Australia's leading labour economists. …
