Did you know that developmental education is the starting place for more than half of college graduates in open access/open admissions institutions? This is just one important statistic for developmental education professionals to know. As the largest professional organization in the field, NADE needs to be providing information to the public and policy makers. Providing accurate data about the true impact of developmental education is essential to NADE's mission.

I encourage you to become deliberate about what is measured because what is measured colors public perception and often determines public and legislative support. I also believe that educators must develop multidimensional accountability measures that truly reflect the mission and character of open access institutions and capture the complex enrollment behaviors of today's students. Measures need to include realistic timelines for completion, recognize the accomplishments of returning and part-time students, and provide a more comprehensive picture of the impact of developmental education.

Some individuals and organizations outside the field, through lack of understanding and depth of knowledge of the field coupled with a lack of understanding of the mission and vision of open access colleges, have created policies that will limit access and opportunities for many students. …
