What wakes you in the middle of the night-inexplicable

dreams, which seem to be constructed of jigsaw

pieces from different puzzles, so that however hard

you try to fit them together, no complete picture ever

seems possible? What wakes you when everyone

else is asleep-the tepid, sluggish heat or the slyly darting

daggers of cold, draughts that seek out your vulnerabilities

like an ancient swordsman? Or is it just simple banality?

Endless ledgers of unfinished business? Or is it fear?

Terror? What wakes you in the deathly hours before

dawn-a hiccup of the heart as it trips as it slows

at the hour when so many are carried away

to the other side of the mystery? What stirs you

when you should finally be snuggled into the circadian

cycle of all good citizens but find your thoughts so much

farther and nearer from the straight and narrow path? …
