Within Canadian studies scholarship discussions on Newfoundland nationalism remain overshadowed by the province's larger neighbour, Quebec. However, with recent public battles between St John's and Ottawa over equalisation payments and offshore resource revenues occurring amid the backdrop of lingering tensions with Quebec over the benefits of Labrador hydroelectricity, Newfoundland nationalism has been attracting more scholarly attention.

What makes Jennifer Delisle's book an original contribution to this discussion is her focus on analysing Newfoundland nationalism through the prism of literature. She notes that Newfoundland nationalism is driven by a 'collective memory of Confederation', a history shaped by the recent memor y of living in an independent country, and a 'sense of alienation from the Canadian nation'; it is, she argues, both a 'political movement and a cultural phenomenon' (pp. 18-19). The sum total of these factors has led not only to the establishment of a thriving local publishing industr y and the prevalence of cultural nationalism within the province's education curriculum but also a constant reimagining of the Newfoundland nation among those writers who are connected to the province but live elsewhere; in short, the diaspora.
