Minority Rules: Turn Your Ethnicity into a Competitve Advantage by Kenneth Arroyo Roldan and Gary M. Stern. 2006. New York NY: HarperCollins Publishers. 279 Pages. Hardcover. $22.95

The book is intended for a person of color or a woman who wants to move up the corporate ladder. The authors provide strategies for minorities to succeed in the corporate environment and explains how to use ethnicity as a professional advantage. The authors begin by explaining the six steps that it will take to succeed past the obstacles:

1. Create a strategic blueprint early in your career. The authors explains that you will need to establish your own personalized game plan. Determine where you would like to be in the next five years and how you expect to get there. You should research companies to determine which companies are striving to create a level playing field, and which are not. Avoid the senior executive trap by scoping out which minority executives will groom you and welcome you, and which will want nothing to do with you. The authors mention performing your own self- assessment. Determine your strengths and weaknesses and how you can use your strengths to advance your career. What areas do you need to work on, and how can you develop them? You will also need to master core competencies. If you understand the company culture and you can present yourself as energetic and dynamic and offer a vision to help the company, you will advance. This book suggests that you should build relationships by continuing to get involved in the company's mentoring program and align yourself with other key professional organizations. Lastly, you will need to toot your own horn. Find ways to publicize your efforts within the organization.

2. Build a career step-by-step. This involves thinking about the next job that will boost your career. The authors suggest writing down the steps that you will need to take and skills required to be considered for this future job. They suggest that expanding your network will ensure that you avoid being pigeonholed. It is also important to continue to find ways to generate more revenue for the company. Roldan believes that every move you make should result in advancing your career. Plan ahead, strategize and develop your own success plan.

3. Choose a Mentor. Reach out and find a mentor, or several mentors, rather than sit back and wait for mentors to find you. …
