His hand doesn't find the alarm clock in the usual spot; the buzzing seems to come from some undetermined place, lost at the frontiers of sleep. Emeri Nyus defers opening his eyes, resolved to remain in the realm of darkness. In his vicinity, as if arranged by a drunken set designer, spaces and objects assault the most elementary rules of domestic utilitarianism. Emeri Nyus must open doors, cabinets, and drawers at random in order to find rooms, clothing, food, and the exit to his house. The sun, shriveled like a cloudy hologram, moves in the opposite direction. The streets are reversed, and buses follow unpredictable routes. When Emeri Nyus manages to arrive at work, he finds the premises occupied by an orthopedic workshop where nobody can give him a reasonable explanation concerning the whereabouts of his secretary, his office, his tools. Surrendering to the seriousness of a sequence without any apparent logic, Emeri Nyus moves from one place to another for the rest of the day: the duplex that was the site of his last sentimental incursion has become a design studio; his parents' apartment is inhabited by a foreign family; the home of his lifelong friend has been converted into an employment agency; his favorite restaurant is a laundry. …
